Most people are surprised to learn that ‘Canada is the world’s second-largest country in total area, after Russia. Canada offers a very wide range of university/higher education options and life-enriching experiences at its universities and colleges. Universities and Colleges in Canada are diverse in both their size and the programs they offer, and are located across the country, with at least one in every province.

University degrees are offered at three successive levels — bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD/doctoral — with the completion of a degree from the lower level generally a prerequisite for admission to the next. Students at the bachelor’s, level are known as undergraduates. Completion of a secondary-school program, is the normal prerequisite for admission to undergraduate study. Most universities also have special entrance requirements and paths for older students. Bachelor’s degrees typically require three or four years of full-time study, depending on the province.

A master’s degree typically requires two years of study after completion of a bachelor’s program. A minimum of three years of study and research, including the completion of a dissertation, are the normal requirements for a PhD/doctorate. Universities offer students more than courses and programs; they also provide services and resources. Counselling, study-skills workshops, career-placement centres, scholarships, athletics, housing, and additional services are available on most campuses.
